ack, my apologies for necro-posting...

reggie, i know who and what you\\\'re talking about, and while none of us speak in truly unbiased terms, i will say this:

she wasn\\\'t completely wrong this time.

the books are speaking out against something, but i don\\\'t think it\\\'s god. i\\\'ve read a few interviews Pullman has done (not just the ones on wikipedia), and it sounds more like he\\\'s criticizing religious corruption, zealotry, and close-mindedness. and that\\\'s absolutely fine. the point at where people get mad is because the main characters ARE on a quest to kill the god of that particular multiverse.

there\\\'s one bit of info that keeps floating around, and that\\\'s that Philip Pullman is somehow the \\\"Anti-Lewis\\\", having written a Narnia-like story (talking animals and witches) but snubbing god the whole way. as far as i can tell, it comes out of this article ( http://www.lewrockwell.com/spectator/spec11.html ) but has drifted into critics\\\' arguments across the board. i think the closed-off conservatives have taken this and the \\\"kill god\\\" mission and have just flung accusations everywhere (not that i\\\'m doing the same >_>).

i guess the books have won a lot of awards, though. i haven\\\'t read them, but i am curious. i don\\\'t see why religious people wouldn\\\'t read them or see the movie though. i mean, you love the Chronicles of Narnia, and i haven\\\'t seen you genuflect yet, so i can only assume that it\\\'s our choice, and not some magical book-y influence that Lewis and Pullman are using to control us.

Carrie-

I saw the show in Manhattan. It was terrific! Very fun, very smart, and superbly done. I highly recommend it.

CarrieP,

I think that almost anything that promotes delight for its own sake is bound to be subversive, at least in the US. And all that pig-frog premarital sex!

I feel kind of goofy, though, for not figuring out which song you meant sooner. I\\\'ve come to associate \\\"Mah na ma na\\\" with an Austin band called the Asylum Street Spankers that does the song at all their live gigs. I just couldn\\\'t bring the Muppets to mind, until...pheNAmaNA! :)

All day on Fox News today they were running stories about how religion is under attack in America.

The one that got my attention was about a girl who was valedictorian for her high school.

She\'s suing the school for 20-something thousand dollars for withholding her diploma after she deviated from the speech that she submitted and had approved to give at the graduation ceremony.

This is standard procedure for all high schools as far as I know. You have to submit your speech and it has to be approved...not that big of a deal.

Why then can this girl sue the school even though she knew she was breaking form?

Because she decided to make her speech about how Jesus Christ was responsible for all her success.

She admits that she knew it was going to cause a stir, and when it did, she gets to sue, because that\'s religious persecution.

I have another Hero, just heard an interview with Greydon Square on Skeptics Guide to the Universe. He is a hip-hop artist who sings (raps?) about skepticism and atheism. During the day, he\\\'s a physics student.

I finally had a chance to listen to this episode yesterday. When iTunes updated my iPod it erased my menu screens for some reason...all the stuff was still on my iPod, but the menus were gone, so I had to go a whole day at work without any podcasts....ugghh.

Anyway, awesome show, etc, etc...

George, that story your mom told was amazing. I was quite surprised to hear her go into so much detail about something like that from her life, very cool.

I really like this idea of having religious morons and religious heroes. It\'s nice to have something a little uplifting considering how depressing some of the morons can get. Like Fred Phelps, for example. I\'ve been following that story pretty much since the war began. And I do know that the biker group, that spellwight mentioned, has been in Michigan at funerals, so there are chapters of them that are getting around. Some of you know that I work in the memorial industry (I design gravestones) and I\'ve seen many examples of vandalism or \"protest\" that people do at cemeteries, it\'s all quite sickening.

As far as personal stuff goes, I just want to hear good entertaining shows, whatever that may entail, and have some fun discussions to fill the week before the next one.

Marvin, it\'s interesting that you mention the Golden Compass. The other day an acquaintance of mine who acts all religious (emphasis on the \'acts\'...we don\'t talk about it very much for obvious reasons) informed me that the whole point of that movie is to teach children that they should hate god....I had never heard anything like that before, I just thought it was about ass kicking polar bears...I may have to go see it now...lol.

Carrie, if my heart were a cookie it\'d be warm and gooey chocolate chip.

And does anyone else think that it\'d be awesome to see a far future sci-fi story, mirroring current hysteria, revolving around a holy war between followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and those of the Invisible Pink Unicorn?

:-D

Can a podcaster \\\"beef\\\" turn out any way but ugly and humiliating for all concerned? Or is it an East Coast thing that my tiny Texas mind can\\\'t fathom? I\\\'m not sure I want to know. I do know I don\\\'t want to have to lose any more of my life to KATG to keep up.

Anyways.... Geo\\\'s Mom was brilliant this week, and Geo, you ain\\\'t bad either. I\\\'m going to check out Reason Driven Podcast next.

Some nominations for Religious Morons:

* The Catholic League, for trying to boycott The Golden Compass and for urging the beatification of Pope Pius XII.

* Bishop Jack Iker and the Fort Worth Diocese of the US Episcopal Church -- he\\\'s a major leader of the group that wants to break away and affiliate with African Anglican Communion so that he can keep discriminating against women and gay people. (Hero of the week: my dad, who got himself sacked from his position at his little church for daring to stand up to these goons. More at my livejournal.)

* Which brings us to present Archbishop of Canterbury, for being a spineless worm and betraying his own principals for the sake of an Anglican Communion that apparently needs to spread in the third world by embracing the traditional values of misogyny and homophobia.

The show really resonated with me. When Geo\\\'s Mom started talking about her childhood, I was hoping they\\\'d keep it going. Not only did Geo find out something new about his Mom, but he has it recorded for posterity. I think that\\\'s great.

Being from a pretty secular family we have settled on Thanksgiving as our holiday (along with 4th of July). It\\\'s just a great time to get together, over-eat and be with all the siblings. It leaves the hokey religious observance of traditional pagan holidays to the in-laws.

The parody bits at the beginning and end were great. Especially, Hush-hush, I was in tears!

To Cornelius,

I think that actually is her legal name. Allegedly, as the doctor was delivering her, she gave him a chilean kick as she popped out of the womb. He landed head first into the nearest waste basket. Seeing as she was a girl, her parents couldn\\\'t call her Pele, so they gave her a good \\\"american\\\" name like soccergirl. There\\\'s nothing more american than soccer ;)

First off, great show(again). And second, I LOVE the song at the very end of the show! I think I\\\'ve heard most of your musical work, and I must admit...the stuff you do as a \\\"demo\\\" or what-have-you, just your voice and the acoustic guitar, the moment you are capturing with just those two elements say so much more than what a full production can at times. but, no matter how you decide to go about re-recording this song or others like it, I\\\'m more than sure I\\\'ll love it either way. Great job, my friend......Stan.

I worked for Lens Crafters for 13 in Canada and I can tell you Geo the first rule of LC is Thou shall not get sued, the law in Ontario is you cant use a prescription that is more than 2 years old. We were told never to use an old Rx, I was one told that \\\" A customer can sue us if they have eye problems from an old prescription\\\". But as you found out there are always ways around the problem. Your state may have the same rules, I know that Pearl is a bit more relaxed, but it is a good idea to get you eyes tested every two years or so.
One other thing, I just mite start believing in god,but only if I can be there by the Pearly Gates when Fred Phelps comes to get his just reward, just to see the look on his face, it might be worth it.
Be cool!

I love this show. I wish I\\\'d have read the comments on the last episode before listening though, I thought he was talking about FPR and I was like \\\"Oh crap, I pissed off George...\\\" *lol*

I\\\'ve never even heard of that other show but it sounds like their listeners come from quite the fermented gene pool.

Don\\\'t worry about Dub, he\\\'s usually harmless, unless you are allergic to laughter. If you were, would you be listening to this or reading the comments?

Geo, you should check out this song: \\\"still gonna die\\\" by Old Dogs. ItMS classifies it as rock/hip hop, although it is decidedly country imo. It would make a great companion for the song at the end of the podcast.

On the personal life thing: what you tell us is what you want us to know. You just may be conspiring with soccergirl to boost listenership(hm, the dictionary in OS X wants this as 2 words. Perhaps this is Make with the good English fodder?), but why the hell should we reasonably demand(and expect) answers to personal questions like that?

juliofromny

LOL.. Just finished listening to KATG #617. They just replayed geo\\\'s skit at the end of their show and read some of his emails that he sent to his booker. The skit is actually funnier the second time. So I guess this interview thing is gonna happen sometime next week?

Can\\\'t wait to see the fireworks.

Maybe you can get SG to come down from Germantown and it can be a Springer like show. Have Brolo come out and surprise everyone. I\\\'m actually morbidly curious to see how this will end.

Religious Moron material:
Small tidbit of laughing material, I was at Wal-Mart the other day and saw this section for religious shirts. One said \\\"CIA: Confidence in the Almighty\\\" What? Another said, get this, \\\"F.B.I.: Firm Believer In Jesus\\\" What the shit? This would make good religious moron material and Make with the Good English stuff. Sure, this is random, but more interesting than a bunch of the trolls who decide to post their bitching against George on the comments, right? It\\\'s funny that those jerks think they\\\'re accomplishing something when George is just going to throw their shit right into their faces. Losers. Go Geo. (beware lameness)
Robert George and the Biologic Podcast. Ha. Ha.Ha. Now, excuse me, I\\\'m going to go eat a cookie.

juliofromny
sixteen and a half years ago

hey carrie,

the expression is COCKLES, not cookies, of the heart. It is a total ripoff from Dennis Leary\\\'s \\\"no cure for cancer album\\\". I believe it is in his \\\"asshole\\\" song. It\\\'s been a while since I listened to it, but that expression has long stayed in my brain. Can you believe after my little purification, pusher geo emails me back and pushes me back to my addiction?! What nerve?!. I\\\'m already subscribed to his podcast and listen to it obssesively as it is. He want\\\'s me to become his stalker too??

what\\\'s the greeting phrase I\\\"m suppose to say when I meet him again? is it \\\"vibraphone\\\"?

juliofromny
sixteen and a half years ago

hey carrie again,

I just realized that you understood. Sorry... Busy commenting while at work LOL. I think my heart, if it was a cookie, would be chips ahoy :)

juliofromny
sixteen and a half years ago

wow, what an opening. I\\\'m glad I wasn\\\'t drinking something as I was listening. I see geo has hopped over on the KATG forums as well; as he pretty much quoted the guy who didn\\\'t realize that his comments weren\\\'t censored at all but then insisted to stand by his views anyway.

anywho, on to other things. My wife was telling me that on yahoo news there was a survey assessing Lens&Crafters, Wallmart and Costco regarding quality of service and products. \\\"Surprisingly\\\" enough, L&C rated the worst. 3 out 4 glasses were actually badly done (their bifocal lines weren\\\'t straight either). I used to go to L&C for my glasses all the time but I now go to a local optometrist, as his prices are pretty competitive and the glasses are just plain outstanding.

Now that I gave you a nice little tip, would you please (I blame you for this side of me btw), please tell me what\\\'s going on with you and sg/bg. I\\\'ve become a pod gossip whore and I need closure on this whole \\\"soap-opera\\\" like relationship. You already know my email address so if you just don\\\'t want to post your answer on here, just email me your response :)

Now that I\\\'ve finished listening to this podcast in its entirety (between my daily job tasks of course) I\\\'ve decided to go with the last thing Geo said about this whole gh/sg thing. I took a step back, looked myself in the mirror and asked myself, what have I become.

Geo made a good point about his privacy. Just b/c he is a pseudo-celebrity in the podosphere, it doesn\\\'t warrant us to know every exact detail about his life (even if he hints and implies and doesn\\\'t differentiate between his real life and his shtick persona on his show). Just b/c he blurs the line on his life we are only allowed to know what he wants us to know and just let him entertain us. Entertainer, is after all his profession and lot in life.

So I ask Geo, within the deepest cockles of my heart, to please forgive my constant pestering. You deserve your privacy.

On a different sg related topic. Brother Love wrote a song about her. It\\\'s called \\\"soccergirl\\\" of course and she played it on one most recent episodes. If you\\\'re curious you may want to check it out.

I didn\\\'t spell check this so please don\\\'t scrutinize my writing too harshly :)

There\\\'s an organization called the PGR (http://www.patriotguard.org/) that watches where that stupid church is going to picket and then stands as guard between them and the actual funerals. I\\\'m not sure if this biker/veteran group is nationwide yet, but they\\\'re working on it.

Brilliant intro George. Hehe. I almost spat coffee all over my computer.

If you don\\\'t mind me asking, what is the problem with your eyesight? I have one eye short sighted and astigmatism in the other (that is degenerating slowly) so I really should get my eyes rechecked every time I get a new pair of glasses. Having said that, I think that it is *entirely* your choice if you want to take the risk that your prescription is out of date. (Though we are a bit spoiled here in Australia - eye exams are usually covered by our healthcare system at no out of pocket expense).

So as always, nice show!

One of your Religious Morons struck close to home. I have Jehovah\\\'s Witnesses in my family and it hasn\\\'t turned out to be a total joy ride I can tell you. At my grandfather\\\'s funeral one of them stood up, literally on his grave. \\\"Well, Dad didn\\\'t believe in Jehovah, but I am sure now he is really seeing he was wrong.\\\" Yah sucks to you Dad, was very much implied. Nothing quite like sticking to the dead.
Yes as you might imagine, the drinks after the funeral were a little tense. Morons.
